Election 2004!

Another election, another charade!

Frequently Asked Questions

Every four years, America goes into Screaming Ninny mode and gets its collective panties in a wad about this thing called voting. I don't vote, and I get a lot of grief for it. And, since this is still a relatively free country, I now will exercise my freedom of speech to write a little FAQ, based on questions I've handled over the past ten years or so.

  1. Why don't you vote?
    A) I don't feel that voting means anything more than a legitimization of a system that is both corrupt and broken. Especially at the Federal level.
  2. Don't you feel like having a voice in how your country is run?
    A) If "having a voice" means having to choose, every four years, between two men that I wouldn't trust to hold my coat for a minute then thank you, I'll pass.
  3. Aren't we past that whole "the two parties are not different at all" crap of 2000? I mean, look at what we got!
    A) And we will never know what Gore would have done to this country. That's the way history works. You want a different outcome? Have Phillip Roth write you a book. For all we know, Gore's presidency would have had very similar outcomes. Keep in mind that the Clinton administration also had a huge hard-on for knocking off Hussein, while not much attention was paid to Bin Laden. If you ask me, the influence of the Bin Laden family does not end with the Bushes.
  4. But, but, but, you have to vote!
    A) No, I don't. I don't even have to register to vote.
  5. Wouldn't you like to see Bush out of office?
    A) I'd like to see the fundamental notion of the "Office of the Presidency" changed, not just the people in it.
  6. Couldn't you just go ahead and vote while the system is changed? I mean, you can't change the system without participating in it.
    A) That's a very good question, and honestly it is one of the few that I do not have a quick, smart ass answer for. I feel that legitimizing the election process is wrong, though. As far as "using the tools of the man against him," I don't know how well that works anymore. Have you read recent Supreme Court decisions? These people all seem broken.
  7. So, you are some kind of anti-democratic, anti-voting person?
    A) No, I'm all for democracy and voting. I just don't think we have that kind of system.
  8. But, voting for president is the most important thing you can do in a democracy. They run the country!
    A) Yes, they do. But local governments can wield so much more power. Why, for instance, do you think no one in the press mentions Santa Monica when the bogus issue of raising the minimum wage in the country is brought up? Do you think that people would rejoice to know that Santa Monica has not yet fallen into the sea, a ghost town of failed commerce, since the 40 largest businesses there were legally mandated to pay employees $10.50 an hour in 2001? What does that say for national leadership now?

I'm always interested in taking new questions. Just mail them in and I'll get around to them.
